Cone in a California

From Oldpiper73 on 3/25/2011 7:21:34 PM

What cone does Crafters use in the California and what is the diameter? Trying to get information out of Mark Taylor is impossible. I'm wondering if a Scheerhorn or Quarterman would improve the sound - not that I have a problem with it. Just like to mess around. I'd probably change the spider at the same time if I do anything. Probably let a good luthier do the work.

Wise to let a luthier, but find one with Reso cred; I let a luthier do some work on mine and it had to be redone "reso style." Pay a little more if they'll let you watch the work!
Good luck-

I let Bobby Wright set mine up with a Quarterman cone ebony capped maple inserts, new bone nut etc , and he raised the action to around 9/16 high and its almost twice as loud as it was, and the intonation etc was better.

I have a Tennessean from 1996. I recently put in a Scheerhorn cone and it made it punchier and little smoother or even. I don't know if it's any louder, but it just sort of cleaned up the sound. Not sure what it had in it, but I really prefer the Scheerhorn.
