Instrumentals: Jerusalem Ridge, Bill Cheathem. Perhaps some alternate tuning , like Dennis started to explain last time would be of interest.

Hi Jack...........I just added these to the list..............noted that you would play/lead these tune for the rest of us.
.........if my assumption is wrong.........and you want to "teach" these that works too...........just let me know which you prefer.
Thanks........
Tom

Hi Tom:
I'm still in the process of learning them (should have a passable version by the 15th). I think what we started to do with Angeline Baker last time, where we saw different locations to play out of, was a good start to learning and playing a particular song. Unless one knows a particular instrumental, jamming along with it can be difficult for some. Songs with vocals are a bit more "friendly" to play along with. If somene wants to learn an instrumental, then teaching it, part by part, makes sense.

Jack, are you playing Jerusalem Ridge in a minor tuning?

Hey Dennis:

The tab I have is playing out of Gm (both B strings tuned to Bb). I've seen Ickes doing it without retuning. I guess both methods have their own advantages. What is your preference?

Hey Dobrologists................Gee...........there sure a lot of ways and exotic ways to play any of this stuff.
I'm thinking that we might want to stay with a "standard" tuning........for the most part on the teaching side of the coin and then offer a different tuning version as demonstrated and requested........this kind of simplfies it for the folks that only have one instrument and have been working to learn tunes on that machine. I think it is also terrific to offer to teach some of the altered tunings and tricks associated with them.........this makes me think back to a steel guitar friend I had in the 1950's........his name was Floyd Nothstein..........he played an 8 string national.........on legs.....no pedals..............he new a lot about music but couldn't play well..........and if you asked him what "tuning" he was using..........he would never tell anyone.......just said it was a .....bas#$@d...... tuning.....it was a version of E7th.....................??..........
The fact is at the Dobro Meetings..........everyone is on equal ground and all suggestions and ideas should be considered.
Lets have fun........and learn from each other..........
Tom

Dobrologists? You must not be talking to me, Tom.

Tom and Jack, the standard tuning issue was what prompted my question. I can see using standard G tuning for jamming and teaching new tunes as a group. That makes sense. And talking about alternate tunings for demonstration purposes is a good thing too. It helps broaden the knowledge base.

I've seen Jerusalem Ridge done in Am and Gm on the Dobro but both require flattening the thirds. I really like the tune and have tried playing it on the Irish flute too (in Em). I've seen Rob Ickes playing it on YouTube and his is a really nice version and without analyzing it I assumed it was being played in a minor tuning. So I'll get out my magnifying glass and try to see where he's playing it and in what key. I'm also hoping to decipher Ikes' version of Angeline the Baker by the 15th (or maybe Gaven Largent's (very similar(Thanks Tom))). Maybe I'll just stick to Angeline for now. Jack, I'm happy to hear Jerusalem Ridge any way you want to play it.

Dennis.

Dennis:

I checked out some blogs on Resonation, and it seems Ickes does it in Am, standard tuning, no capo. I like his version, and I think that's the one to go with for now.

Ok Jack, I'll try to sort it out myself as best I can in Am to be a little bit prepared.

That makes two of us. So many songs, so little time!
