Next Thursday, August 8, 2013, I will be returning to Acoustic Music Camp in Arlington, TX for my fourth year in a row. However, this is the first time I will be going with the resonator guitar. In the past, I have attended the guitar classes and songwriting classes. Those were a blast - especially with people like Jim Hurst and Kenny Smith as guitar instructors. Even Brad Davis showed us a lot of neat stuff. However, last year, it started feeling like review of prior years and I wanted something more. A new challenge, if you will. So, I thought long and hard about it and decided that my resonator guitar had been long neglected since I first acquired it and perhaps this was my chance to get a boost on that instrument. So, this year, I'm actually more nervous than prior years because I have done very little practicing and even less jamming with the resonator guitar. I'm afraid I have little to nothing to offer in a jam and I will be petrified to take a solo on it, but this is my chance to break out of those fears and perhaps come home with some new abilities.
David Hamburger is the dobro instructor this time around. I had not heard of him prior to his joining the camp staff at ACM. I have researched his music on YouTube and the Internet, plus I purchased a Dobro Workbook that he authored for Hal Leonard Books back in 1998. I am working to familiarize myself with his techniques in hopes that I will pick up on what he has to teach us a little faster at camp. I have heard good things about him, so I am looking forward to the experience.
I will try to post an update after camp.
