Good to be back again!

Hi gang, just saying hello after re-registering with a new user name, since I couldn't get the old one to work. I'm just getting back into dobro, since a layoff of about 16 years since I had one last. Have mostly been playing acoustic guitar, with a few other critters thrown in along the way.

It's just that dobro just seems to be under my skin and one of my favorites, ever since Norman Blake and Tut put out that album, and I found it in a thrift shop in about 1980 in NYC where we were living after I got married. Well, Brooklyn, to be more precise! I'm grateful to that person who gave it up so I could discover that amazing sound of the dobro! I already new Norman, but thought Tut sounded fine using his flatpick too!

I've had 3 dobros to date, sold the other two when I needed to, and just now ended up with a more entry level Gretsch g9210 Boxcar squareneck, and it surprisingly sounds fantastic! Really! This one was done right, because it just doesn't seem possible that it could sound this good, but it does. I may be old, but my hearing is still too sensitive, which means I can hear the subtleties of the overtones that abound in this one, and the volume is surprising too. I play it quietly in my apartment, and I'm very happy, since even playing like that, it still has a lot of character to the tone. I'm not very good, and have much to catch up on in my learning, but since I've played acoustic guitar on and off all my life, it's helped me be able to sound good on the dobro again, to my ears anyway, once in a while! ; )

So, hello again, and happy to be here still (all around), with a new squareneck to play on! And thanks for having me!

Terminology: Dobro v. Resonator guitar v. Slide guitar?

Whats the best way to let people know that I play a resonator? I play bottleneck slide on a round neck.

To my understanding, "dobro" more refers to lap styled square necks? How would most people refer to round neck slide then? "Resonator guitar" feels like a mouthful...

Dobro Brand P/U?

Good morning, first post :) I just purchased another resonator to go with my Beard Copper Mountain. Listed as a Dobro Model 27 with a Nashville pickup in it. I have installed a few Nashville pickup's and this is not the current version. Can anyone identify this pickup and provide and feedback as to the quality. It has a dobro sticker on the underside of the p/u but I thought that may have been added? It looks to be a good installation, I'm just curious what it could be. Thanks all and have a blessed day.

How did you get this thing off? I've gone after it with a butter knife, screwdriver, etc. and can't get it off. Whats the trip??? Thanks,! Doug

Is This An Oldie But Goodie - Help Identifying

Hi Everyone,

Just became a member. I have been doing some research and looking to find the date and model of a Dobro resonator that was used back in the day by my mother, who used to play in a tamburitza orchestra in the early 1950’s. There is a serial number #160 that is on the top of the headstock, with no date. It has a 1896484-patent number in the chrome by the bridge. The only other information that I know of is that it is missing one string and that one sound hole is a little dented in. Other than that, it has a few scratches but is in great condition. I have included some detailed pictures (limited to three) to possibly aid in determination.

Any help or guidance would greatly be appreciated. The eventual goal is determining a price so that it could be sold, as I am leaving the country to travel abroad. Thanks for the wonderful work you guys do here, it is very much appreciated.

Being in IT and computers, I drummed up some of the AI bots and it is telling me. ==========

Based on the provided serial number and visual characteristics, your instrument is a vintage Dobro guitar, likely a Model 27, manufactured by Regal in Chicago in the mid-1930s.

Identification Details

Model: This appears to be a Model 27, a popular wood-bodied resonator guitar from that era.

Manufacturer/Year: The serial number of 160, being a low two or three-digit number, places it in the production run after Dobro production was assigned to Regal in Chicago around 1937. Regal restarted serial numbers around one and continued into the four digits. The year identification wasn't started until late 1973 by OMI, meaning earlier models relied on physical characteristics for dating.

Key Features:

The overall sunburst finish and specific body shape are consistent with the Regal-built Dobros of the mid-to-late 1930s.

The solid headstock (as opposed to a slotted one seen on some earlier California models) is also a typical feature of the Chicago-made, less expensive lines produced by Regal.

The cover plate screws appear to be at the half-hour points, a change made by Dobro around 1933 to allow access without removing the tailpiece, which would be consistent with a mid-30s production.

This instrument is a piece of musical history and a great find, particularly given its low serial number.

Sad, indeed, and I’ll certainly miss her presence here on the hangout. She always was encouraging to people brave enough to post videos of their playing. I got to know her at ResoGat a number of years back, and I really liked her. Anyway, just thought I’d mention it here so that you all can know why she’s not commenting any more.

Reso Serial Number Puzzle?

Hi all. I've been messing with these instruments for close to 50 years and I've come across one I can't pin down. I have all the charts/guides to find serial numbers, but this one doesn't fit ANY of them. I'm pretty certain it's mid-late 1990's. It's a Model F60, squareneck, flat peghead, sunburst. The serial number is D3041770...no spaces in the number. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Gruhn Guitar trip

Last week I took a trip down to Nashville to see the Dolly Parton musical which was fantastic. One of my "must do" stops of course is the legendary Gruhn guitars. I did not have the foresight to pack my finger and thumb picks or a bar. I did however have a flatpick and a pocketknife. If memory serves me correctly, Tut Taylor was one of the three founders of the store so it was only appropriate that I muddle about with his flatpicking style. Takes some getting used to but I could at least enjoy the tone of those awesome instruments. I really liked the Josh Swift model. Very sharp looking and killer tone. All total, I played a quarter million dollars worth of instruments in an hour and a half or so and two really struck my GAS bone. A pristine National tricone for $4,500 that just sounded so cool and a early 1900s Gibson mandolin for $7,000 that sounded great to my ears. I did pick up a Collings mandolin that had an ear broken off the headstock and repaired poorly but is wasn't structural and the price was good for a Collings. Turns out it was in the SOLD pile. I don't have any new instruments but did have a splendid afternoon.

I was in a store and saw a dobro-style knockoff with the "Richmond" brand on the headstock. Looked to be decently made. Anyone familiar with that brand?
Pretty sure it's not one of those Dobro Richmond models; there was no Dobro branding anywhere on it, just "Richmond".

Getting ready for a gig

I have a gig coming up next Friday so I wanted to get my Beard Jerry Douglas spruced up with a new set of strings. After getting the new strings on I continued on with cleaning up the wood and metal parts. Looking into the wood grain and enjoying the sound of new strings reminded me once again why I love this instrument so much. I’m only playing two songs on the dobro but I wanted it to play, look and sound it’s best.

Enjoy your dobro no matter what it is.

Phil

I just found out that Ron Landis passed away on June 17. I knew him only for his hand-crafted silver finger picks; that was only a fraction of his art and craft and music work. From the Ron Landis Legacy Archive, June 17:

Charlie’s capo question?

Hello I got a Charlie’s capo dobro 6 string capo (amazing capo by the way)

I have lost the metal rod that goes under the strings with the rubber tubing around it. Iv messaged Charlie’s capo’s about this a few times but have failed to receive a reply.

I know there metal rod is from an Allen Key (not sure if it has a different name in the states)

Could someone who owns this capo measure the lengh of the Allen key rod and maybe tell me what size Allen Key was used please? I would rather not have to purchase an entirely new Charlie’s capo when this but can be replaced for virtually no money at all

Cheers Steve

ResoGat 2025 Prize

Greetings from Penn's Woods.

I am donating enough 45 year old Cherry lumber to ResoGat this year to build an instrument. Will be used as part of our fundraising/ scholarship efforts. Included are pieces for top, back, sides and neck, Also will include some extra pieces for bracing, trim etc. Top/back pieces are 3/4" x 10" x 32", sides are 3/4 x 5" x 40" and the neck piece is 1 3/4 x 3 1/2 x 22" and still rough. It will need to be re-sawed as I won't be able to get this done before I leave next week. Hope to see you for some pickin' and grinnin'.

Picture is from 2016

Has anyone here replaced the JD Aura with a Baggs Voiceprint?

I like the JD Aura pedal, but I have to run it through a separate DI to go to the mixing board, and to have mute and boost capabilities. I've been using the Baggs Venue for that purpose. It works well, although I get lost in the various knobs.

I picked up the Baggs Voiceprint and was able to make a voice print for my Beard with the Nashville pickup in about five minutes. This pedal has a mute, and by duplicating my basic setting with one that has a higher volume, I can achieve a "boost" by toggling between those two. Of course, I won't know how well it sounds until I use it on stage. But having said that, I never really know how well the Aura sounds out front when I'm playing on the stage. I just have to rely on people I know in the audience for feedback.

So, as my post's title asks: has anyone switched from the JD Aura to the Baggs voiceprint (or another IR creating pedal)? Any possible downsides I'm not considering?

Thanks!

Jerry Douglas AND Rob Ickes scheduled for my local festival!

The Earl Scruggs Music Festival is very close to me - Mill Spring, North Carolina- and I have been going for several years. It was watching Jerry Douglas there each year that got me interested in playing the dobro and I’ve been playing a square neck for a couple of months now. They announced the lineup for this year (it’s Labor Day weekend) and Jerry Douglas AND Rob Ickes will both be playing this year! How cool is that?!

My wife, who is not a fan of bluegrass, does not understand my excitement.
I'm Recruiting Lessons and Links Admins

Hey Folks,

I'm looking for a few good men (or women) who will volunteer to help grow the lessons and links archives on the Reso Hangout.

Lessons: http://www.resohangout.com/lessons/
Links: http://www.resohangout.com/links/

I'm not asking for a specific time commitment, and it doesn't take any special technical skills. I've even got a couple little "help" pages set up to give you some guidance on using the admin tools.

Style Guidelines: http://www.resohangout.com/links/admin-guidelines.asp
Using the Tools: http://www.resohangout.com/links/admin-howto.asp

I especially need help in the lessons area--I know there are hundreds of dobro lessons out there, but they aren't in the archive yet and I need folks to go find them!

If you're up for it, please volunteer here: http://www.resohangout.com/pages/volunteer.asp

Thanks!

_eric schlange

Why should a dobro player never leave home without his slide?
Just in case he''s in an accident, he wouldn''t want to be mistaken for a banjo player.
