Are there any Smith & Young owners out there? I have a metal-bodied square neck model that NRP told me is one of only 15 made. I would be interested in hearing about other instruments from this short-lived brand.
I purchased a Smith & Young Model 11 Roundneck on this site. here's the ad:

Very nice, and from my perspective, you bought it for a very good price as well. Not too many made their way to Canada so I have never seen any of the wood bodied guitars but I think my metal square neck is made just as well as any of the modern Nationals. The serial number on mine is 005.
Thanks for the reply.
I first heard of these when Artisan Guitars in Franklin TN was a National dealer. The salesman there went on and on explaining the history of Smith & Young and how great they were. I was impressed, but the price tag was way out of my range. A few years later I was able to find one for a lot less. I don’t play much slide unless it’s on a squareneck so this one gets played as an acoustic. It is quite loud & doesn’t have a soft tone, but it is easy to fret without buzzing, no matter how you attack the strings.
Interesting, I find mine to have a rather mellow tone for a metal bodied guitar but it definitely has an old time sound which is what I think they were trying to achieve. I have a 1934 National Style 1 (round neck) and a 1928 Tricone (square neck) and they all sound very different. My main reso for performing is a Beard custom R model with a flame maple body - it's a work of art.
I used to have a maple Smith & Young squareneck. Played it for maybe a year and decided it was too shrill and spiky for my style. But the guy who bought it loves it. If a guitar suits you, that's what matters. So congrats on a high-quality purchase.
By the way, your new guitar looks a lot like my National Style-0 roundneck, an instrument I hope never to part with.

That's where I got mine, a maple sunburst squareneck. They did a shoddy job installing a pickup, so I had to write to K&K to get a decent socket, grr.
Never liked the sound of it — loud enough, but shrill and aggressive, like a Telecaster bridge pickup with the treble up. Good once in a while, but if that's all they got . . . .
Now I have a more humble Red Line Econoline, and my happiness is complete.
