I received an email this morning advising that Janet Newsom, aka dobrojan passed away on October 11th, and the celebration of life is tomorrow. Sad, indeed, and I’ll certainly miss her presence here on the hangout. She always was encouraging to people brave enough to post videos of their playing. I got to know her at ResoGat a number of years back, and I really liked her. Anyway, just thought I’d mention it here so that you all can know why she’s not commenting any more.
How sad. I am a new dobro player. Last year shortly before Christmas I posted on this forum for the first time about wanting to learn to play and wanting to get my first dobro. She emailed me in response, and we corresponded over many emails with her patiently answering all of my questions and sharing loads of information with me. She helped me search the internet looking for a used instument that fit my budget, and would discuss the pros and cons of the ones we found until I eventually found the right one and bought it. I was grateful for how much time she spent helping me, someone she had never met. I finally met her in person at ResoGat this past July. Only about two months ago she helped me find a dobro teacher in my neck of the woods. She was a good, kind, and generous person.

When I read about this earlier today on the Facebook Resogat page, I was shocked.
I never got to meet Jan in person, but she had long been one of my favorite "dobro people" going to back to the days of the Jerry Douglas Bulletin Board in the early 2000's (later the NeighBrohood Forum). I spoke to her on the phone a couple times along with some texting, and bought some accessories from her over the years, and we communicated often online and through occasional emails.
In 2019 my wife and I took a trip to Nashville where we stayed with some friends who had moved from my town here in Sonoma County a number of years ago. We did an overnight trip to Chattanooga to check it out. Jan and her husband lived in nearby Signal Mountain. I wanted to to get up there to see her for at least a short visit, but we were pretty rushed it didn't happen. Now I'm even more bummed out we couldn't make that work.
Rest in Peace Jan, our family of dobro players won't be the same without you.
Few folks are as passionate about Dobro and Bluegrass music as Jan. At the end of last ResoGat, she was happily showing me a new guitar she picked up to add to her collection. ResoGat - and the reso world - will not be the same without her.
I hope the folks that gathered up near Wilkesboro today mourned, honored and celebrated her well. Wish I could have been there. RIP Jan.
